Just wondering if anybody has had the hole in the heart sealed with EA and has it been beneficial. I have not been opperated on before and my hospital are on about sealing the hole in my heart up before fixing the valve problem. I luckly only have very minor symtoms with EA for the past 20 years and i have not got any worse.

  1. Hi. I have a hole with my EA. I am due to have an operation at the Brompton in London in May as my condition has worsened over the past year. My surgeon tells me that he may close the hole or may not. During my life, I believe the hole has enabled me to live pretty normally as it has released the pressure on the right atrium, so that the blood flow is not as much as it could have been. I guess it depends on whether it is necessary or you want it closed? For me it causes no problems but it may not be the same for you.I would be asking the surgeon is it necessary? Good luck with any operation you have in the future. I am looking forward to living a life without palpatations and breathing problems!

  2. Hi i had my ASD (atrial hole)patched when i was 20. Yes i my case it was very beneficial. It was decided to close the hole after i has a stroke.
A blood clot travelled through the hole to my brain. Lucky it was only a minior stroke.
    best of luck

  3. 21 years old. Was wondering the same thing. Like yourself Jacinta I recently had a stroke where a blood clot traveled through the hole to my brain and the cardiologists have now decided that surgery is on the horizon to patch up the whole. My health has definitely declined in the past 6 months or so leaving it a struggle for me to even the most minimal tasks of walking 10 minutes down the road to the shop. It’s not been greatly explained in detail yet by doctors as to how I will benefit from it and would be grateful to know how you felt after having the ASD closed up ?

  4. Well I had and attempt of and ASD at my hospital however it fell out so the hospital decided to fix all my problems at the same time as I had to be open heart surgery anyway to get the device out I have now recovered and the surgery of a replacement valve has worked very Well for me didn’t realise how bad my health was untill I am now better

  5. Btw I am the same person who commented at the start with the user name Mcfall1 as I have changed my username to Sophie now. Just realised it looks like a different person is commenting . So anyway I had a planned ASD done however it fell out when they were bringing me round from being asleep so I had to have open heart surgery to get the device out . So the surgeon decided to fix my valve with a replacement there and then to save having another operation again . They told me this is very rare for them to fall out I was just unlucky . The hole has now been stitched up as well as having a new valve . Feel loads better to what I was :) good luck with your procedure I’m sure it will go to plan
