Is this normal with Ebstein’s that babies hate tummy time? He cries the whole time he is on his tummy. I only can deal with him crying for just a few minutes. I would love to know if anyone has had this experience. Does it hurt their chest? Is it too much “work” for them? His Ebstein’s isn’t severe but significant the cardiologist say. Anyone have any answers or any thoughts on this please email me or post on here! tommygirl_26201 [at] yahoo [dot] com

I found that my daughter hated being on her front as well. At the next check up I asked the nurse to monitor her whilest on her front and the lines started going all funny and nurse was very concerned and immediately asked me to turn her over and avoid putting her on her front.
Emma is sitting up, crawling and trying to stand up despite never having been on her tummy.

My 2 year old little boys would be really distressed on his front as well i could never get him to stay there without getting distressed. I wonder if this is common with babies with this?

Thanks for responding.. he is 6 months now and STILL hates it but tolerates it a little bit longer… a whole 3-4 minutes. LOL That’s what I was wondering if this is common with Ebstein’s?

I think they just need to get used to tummy time, it should not affect them any differently than any other baby. All babies need to build up a tolerance for it, and as they do they last longer. It is developmentally important for them, they need to build up their neck strength as well as not always be on their back so that they don’t develop a flat spot. So continue to work on it, and slowly build up the time spent on their tummy.

My son was born with Ebsteins and he hated tummy time, physios wanted us to keep trying so did it every day with him. Tried it when he was happy, after nappy changes and after baths etc but he always cried and was fine as soon as I put him on his back.

I continue to put him on his tummy even at 6 months just for the few minutes that he will tolerate it! Which is normally no more than 5 minutes! Even when he rolls over himself he cries! He does lift his head in frustration…lol.

Hello… i have ebstein anomaly here and am age 28 now and just had tricuspid valve replaced a month ago… i can tell you this, my mom told me when i was a baby, i hated to be on my tummy and even for crawling, i would only scoot on my back not on my front no way as a baby. and even today if i lay on bed on my tummy it still bother me, it like i cant breathe when i am on my tummy.

Thank you so much Rita for your input and it’s nice to have someone with Ebstein’s in their adult years have their insight on this! Thanks Again! He is 9 months old now and is tolerating a lil more but not much. He scoots on his butt to get where he wants to go! LOL

Just be patient. My six month old son wasn’t really, really comfortable on his tummy until three or four months old. Babies these days spend so much time on their backs (sleeping, in swings, in car seats, etc…) that it can be unfamiliar and uncomfortable for them. Try some of these things.

Thanks Melinda but Jacob is 10 months now and he is walking around the coffee table now! WOW.. where has the time gone? I really appreciate all the comments on my post though! His Ebstein’s is a very mild case and hopefully it will stay that way! Prayers to all of you and my lil Jacob!

I have a 7 month old boy with Ebsteins and he definitely HATES tummy time. At first he just starts to fuss a little but within a minute or so he is screaming to get on his back again. I never thought about this being due to his heart, but the conversation here makes me think maybe it is. I’ll ask our cardiologist next week at our apt and will report back.

Thanks Cara..Jacob is a year old now and “scoots” around leading with his right leg only. He never did “crawl” on all 4. How is your 7 month lil boy, Cara?

Yes our daughter didn’t like tummy time as I remember (all a bit of a blur tbh). She’s 4 now and crawled and walked fine in the end.

It sure does..bulwellbiscuit. Even though he is 18 months now, he never really crawled he more or less scooted! He is finally walking just right before he turned 18 months! How is your 16 year old son now? Is his EA moderate?
