  1. No,Ebsteins Anomaly has not been proven to be hereditary.

“Ebstein’s anomaly occurs as a baby develops in the womb. The exact cause is unknown, although the use of certain drugs (such as lithium or benzodiazepines) during pregnancy may play a role. The condition is rare. It is more common in white people.” http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0004574/

  2. Iam a mother to a twenty five year old she has two children. And has Ebstiens. She has had two surgerys open two closed. Looking at a nother one for val. I’ve been told that it is hereditary. We are in Australia. My daughter is worried that her little girl might have a problem as of late her legs have been turning purple.

  3. Hi there

This is a matter of great debate, have a look at our posts under ‘Is EA hereditary’ to gauge the kind of comments people are posting. My daughter has it but I don’t – although my brother has Wolff Parkinson White syndrome (a cousin of EA). You could advise your daughter to get her child an echocardiogram if she is really worried.

    Good luck

  4. Hi I am 60+ and diagnosed with Ebstein’s Anomaly about 20 years ago by echocardiogram. It has always been non-restrictive, save for I could never understand why it seemed so much harder for my “engines” to fire up in the mornings (tended to be late for school or work).

I had always been told that I had a “heart murmer” and we know it runs through the family on my maternal side.

This morning I found this article from Science Daily, which confirms that Ebstein’s is linked to a particular gene.

  5. Hi Lynn

Thanks for letting us know about this. I will try to get access to the full paper and put it on the website under ‘research’

Without reading it all I cannot say for sure but it looks like they have not ‘proved’ a link since if I am reading this correctly they looked at 141 patients and only 8 had the gene?

    I’ll comment further ASAP
